In bursts the Spring, energetic,
Insistent,
Beckoning with virgin smiles,
Fragrant
Fragile and fey,
Breaking new ground
As if to say,
Come out, come out
Wherever you lurk
Come out, come out
And dig in the dirt;
Grab a fork and trowel
And leaning hoe,
Shake the sleeping spiders
From gloves
Where your fingers go,
Disturb the beds
Where Winter slept,
Dig up the old sod
Wake the worms and bisect
With accidental crooked
Shovel,
Budge over ladies
In red buttoned coats,
The clover and daisies
Are staking a claim
To a yawning yard,
Tulips,
Periwinkle,
Helleborus’s the name;
Come out, come out
Wherever you lurk
Come out, come out
And dig in the dirt.
